Beskrivelse

Holmetorp is divided into three forest areas, most of which are grazed. A wide range of herbs thrive in the rich soil, as well as several exclusive fungi linked to the broadleaf trees. In the western part of the reserve there are remains of an Iron Age village.

Remains of an ancient village

In the western part of the reserve there was a village during the early Iron Age. The village consisted of several houses and around these were fields and meadows. The foundations of the houses, which today are surrounded by wide-crowned oaks, can still be seen today. The stone fences that kept the cattle away from the cultivated land are also still there.

Rich in flowers

In the spring, Holmetorp's forests are full of flowers. Where the sun's rays reach down to the ground, a sea of wood anemones spreads out. Yellow anemones, lungwort and spring onions are also part of the spring flora. In more enclosed areas, herbs such as bush starflower, cranesbill and woodland bells thrive. Later in the season, for example, toothwort and spring pea flower.

Mushroom poetry

Saffron spider moss, yellow spotted wax moth and saddleback moth are all unusual fungi found in the reserve's forests. They thrive in the calcareous soils and are in one way or another linked to deciduous trees. Several of the fungi prefer sparse forest and therefore benefit from forest grazing.

Affected forest

Since 2010, Holmetorp's broadleaf forests have been severely affected by Dutch elm disease and ash dieback. Almost all the elm, maple and ash trees in the area have been wiped out. Dutch elm disease is a fungal disease spread by the elm splinter beetle. Ash dieback is also caused by a fungus that spreads through the air. On the positive side, dead trees become homes for fungi, insects, birds and other organisms.
