Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
The scent of wild thyme, the wistful whistle of the heath pipit and, if you're lucky, the humming of roseate grasshoppers - the rare and barren nature of the Great Alvar offers many experiences!
The nature on Hammarby and Smedby alvar is a mosaic of the alvar's diverse environments. Large parts are made up of the alvar's typical gravel fields and rocks. Here and there, dry and wet meadows spread out like green islands. To the west of Storåsen, a ridge that runs through the reserve in a north-south direction, there is a string of wetlands and wetlands.
Thin soils, high summer temperatures resulting in drought and grazing - these are the conditions for the inhabitants of the alvar. In this very special environment, we find plants that originate from the tundras of the mountains as well as from Mediterranean countries. There are also unusual species of animals, such as the alvar snail. Öland is the only place in Northern Europe where this rarity has been found.
Alvaret is a cultural landscape, created by man and his grazing animals. Grazing has tamed the vegetation for thousands of years - no plant has been able to take over and outcompete the others. On your walk through the reserve you will have the opportunity to see many different plants. In the dry meadows, thyme, rock crab, pimpinell and soapwort grow, and in the calcareous wet meadows, hay flower, marsh gentian and waterweed. The flora of the gravel and rocky ground alvar includes island sunflower, sand onion, alvar wormwood and white buttercup. A characteristic species for the area is the toadflax, a low-growing shrub with yellow flowers that in Sweden only grows wild on Öland and Gotland.
Three kilometers out on the alvar is Storåsen, a ridge running north-south. Storåsen dams some of the Alvar's water flows, and has thus created a string of wetlands and wet meadows along its western edge. When you walk along the alvar road and arrive at Storåsen, there are house foundations. If you then continue along the alvar road to the east, you will pass a large moving block with bowl pits. The road then continues on the other side of the central wall from Skärlövs alvar all the way to Skärlöv. All along Storåsen, where the soil is thick, the trees grow tall; mainly pine and birch. The juniper bushes grow several meters high and form dense curtains together with the trees.
It is believed that people lived in these areas as early as the Stone Age. A little way into the alvar there is a large migratory block with bowl pits. Even in modern times, islanders have sacrificed coins and pancake batter in the pits, to get help and guidance in life. Perhaps it's a tradition that goes back many thousands of years.
