Beskrivelse
The nature reserve protects a stretch of the Emån river, which meanders through vast wetlands and lush floodplain forests. There are also barren rocky pine forests, rich broadleaf forests and mixed forests with old trees. The varied nature provides a habitat for a plethora of species, many of which are rare.
Open, wet lands
Wetlands - this is how the nature reserve can be summarized. The open land is a mosaic of marshes, swamps, bogs and reeds with open water surfaces. This is where lots of mosquitoes, dragonflies and other insects hatch in summer. The abundance of bugs attracts birds and bats. In the past, local farmers mowed these fields to make hay for their cattle, as evidenced by names like Flag and Nerängarna. Traditional haymaking has long since ceased, but to preserve the historic landscape, parts of the reserve are mown and grazed.
Lush forest
The forests along the Emån belong to a rare habitat type called flood forests. When the river floods, the trees receive a lot of nutrients from the water but are also stressed. Some trees therefore die, creating a large amount of decaying wood. This wood is very valuable for beetles and other wood-eating insects. Which in turn become food for woodpeckers and other birds with bugs on their menu.
Noble trees
The reserve's deciduous and mixed forests are only slightly affected by modern forestry. The forests are rich in deciduous trees, especially oak, but also lime, ash, maple and elm. There are also plenty of old and dead trees. The older, leafy forest provides habitats for many species of fungi, mosses, lichens and beetles. When biologists have studied the forests, they have found many unusual species.
Addition of fire-prone forest
In 2016, a pine forest adjacent to the nature reserve was ravaged by fire. Forests affected by fire are valuable natural habitats. This is partly because burnt, damaged and dead trees are important for many endangered insects and fungi. The fire-affected area was therefore incorporated into the nature reserve in 2019.
