Beskrivelse
Dröstorp's alvar is a mosaic of dry meadows, gravel alvars, rocky areas and wetlands. The varied alvar is home to a rich plant and animal life. The area also offers interesting geological formations and a number of ancient monuments.
Interesting geology
In the central part of the reserve there are plenty of natural springs, terraces and open cracks in the limestone - karst. Perhaps most striking are the pits created when caves collapsed (dolines). The most famous is the Priest Pit. It is a 2-3 meter deep circular pit with a diameter of 40 meters.
Bog with birds
Dröstorps mosse is one of the larger lakes on the Alvar. The lake and the surrounding wetlands have a rich bird life. Lapwings and snipe play on the wet meadows well into spring. If you're lucky, the meadow hawk might sail past in the sky.
Traces from the past
In the reserve you can see several ancient remains. Burial cairns and other stone circles can be found in several places, including at Tornör. Björnflisan is the alvar's only rune stone and served as a road sign on the road between Torslunda and Sandby. Although the limestone is now quite weathered, the inscription can still be read: "Jörund erected the stone after his brother".
Interesting place to visit
The houses in Dröstorp's deserted village were built in 1756 when two families moved here to farm the land. In the 1880s, most of the village's inhabitants emigrated to North America and since 1897 the village has been completely deserted. But old house foundations, walls, gate pits and cairns remain!
