Beskrivelse
Bokenäs was protected as a natural monument as early as 1921 and became a nature reserve in 1967. The reserve's forest contains old and rough beech trees. The decaying trees are very valuable as they are home to many different insects, fungi and lichens.
Changing forest
Bokenäs beech forest changes shape in accordance with the seasons. In spring, the sun's rays filter down through the delicate foliage to the ground's sea of whitetips. In summer, the leaves turn a deeper shade of green and the crowns of the trees block out the light. Autumn is characterized by a palette of brown, orange and yellow. And in winter, the smooth, gray trunks of the beech trees catch the eye.
Valuable trees
The beech forest is appreciated by many. In the eastern part of the forest, there are plenty of old and dead beech trees. Beech trees are valuable habitats for insects, lichens and fungi. For example, beetle larvae live in the decaying wood.
The beech became soap
Bokenäs is part of the Värnanäs estate. Wärnaby Mill, Sweden's first detergent industry, was built here in the latter half of the 17th century. The conditions were very good because soap at that time was made from tallow, potash and vegetable oils. Tallow was obtained from old cows and potash from burning hardwood, mainly oak and beech. The oil could be, for example, linseed oil, which was grown locally.

The reserve is located just east of Värnanäs farm, about 4 km east of Halltorp. Follow the gravel road from the farm out towards the sea, continue when it turns left. After a few hundred meters you are there. The gravel road is closed to car traffic, parking is available at Värnanäs.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive a motorized vehicle.
- Set up a motor home, caravan or similar.
- Camp for more than one day in the same place.
- Deliberately disturb wildlife.
- Bringing a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Make a fire.
- Picking or damaging mosses, lichens or wood fungi.
- digging or pulling up vascular plants
- Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or reeds that are growing or dead.
If you have obtained a permit from the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Use the area for competitions or exercises.
- Carry out commercial activities.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct survey or research.
- Set traps to collect insects.

C. Regulations according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general
It is forbidden to enter the reserve:
- drive any kind of motor vehicle
- set up a motor vehicle, caravan, trailer or similar
- Camping for more than one day in the same place.
- Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
- Bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet.
- putting up a picture, sign, poster, poster, art object or similar device or making an inscription
- making a fire
- picking or damaging wood fungi, mosses or lichens
- Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
- Damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brushwood.
- Without the permission of the county administrative board, use the area for competition or training purposes.
- without consulting the county administrative board, carry out collection, investigation or research
- Without the permission of the county administrative board, lease or use the area for commercial use of the right of public access.
The regulations under C do not apply to owners and holders of special rights to property.
