Handlinger

Beskrivelse

In the past, Bockemålen was surrounded by wooded pastures, small fields and meadows. Today, deciduous forests grow around the abandoned croft; forests that are home to everything from beetles to woodpeckers. There are no marked trails in the reserve, but you might find an old farm road to wander along!

Traces of cultivation

There are many traces of the old agricultural landscape in the reserve's forests. Open glades are often abandoned fields. Here and there are also clearance cairns and old farm roads.

Dwellings for rare species

The forests of Bockemål are full of oak trees. The old and decaying oaks are vital for a number of insects. One of the rarities of Bockemål is the orange-spotted brown beetle. Not many people have seen this centimeter-sized beetle, which is black with four orange spots on its back. It is only known from Bockemålen and a few other places in eastern Småland.

Flowers and insects

In the reserve you can see many different plants. Under the crowns of the deciduous trees, musk madder, spring pea and toothwort bloom in spring and early summer. In summer, the roadsides are adorned with flowering field bindweed and bluebells. The abundance of flowers is appreciated by many butterflies and other insects. Keep an eye out for the beautiful and unusual bastard swarmers!

Great habitat for birds

Since the reserve's forest has not been rationally managed to any great extent, there is plenty of dead, decaying wood. The wood is teeming with life, which insect eaters such as the lesser spotted woodpecker and the woodpecker are aware of. Old, coarse aspens are also a valuable feature of the forest. In these trees, the woodpecker hacks out its nest hole. When it abandons its nest, other nesting birds move in, such as the wood pigeon. If you hear a low, two-syllable hooting, the pigeon is not far away!
