Handlinger

Beskrivelse

Björnnäset offers great opportunities for those who want to take a long forest walk. The reserve's trails run through coniferous-scented troll forest, where soft moss and lichen mats spread over countless boulders and past exciting areas where the effects of conservation burning can be seen up close. Only the calls and songs of birds break the silence.

Old trees and burnt forest

Björnnäset's pine forest is between 100 and 150 years old. A few pines are even older than that. So old pine forests are unusual in this part of the country. Despite the age of the forest, you won't see any giant trees on your walk. That's because the trees grow slowly in the lean soils of the headland. Forests like this need disturbance to set new seeds and seedlings. That's why we've been helping the forest grow through conservation burns in different areas.

Uncleared forest

Notice all the dead tree trunks and fallen logs on your way through the old-growth forest, both burnt and unburnt. In a modern managed forest, these would have been cleared away. But in protected forests, the approach to dead wood is different. It is saved here because hollow trunks, burnt wood and rotten logs are highly sought-after homes and food stores for some of the forest's fungi, plants and animals.

Lots to experience on the hike

There is much to discover in the reserve's forests. Various fungi grow on old and fallen trees. If the trees have splintered holes, it is the woodpecker or some other woodpecker that has been looking for beetle larvae. The scorched trees from conservation burns are particularly good larders for woodpeckers. The soft moss mats are home to the peculiar pine herb and the orchid knotweed. In the treetops, tufted titmice and other small birds look for bugs to eat.

Visitor information

There are two trails to choose from in the reserve;

Red trail 3.5 km

Blue trail 2 km

Both trails go past the rest area at the Sjöviken croft where there are rest tables and a small lichen exhibition.

The red trail takes you all the way out to the headland in Åkebosjön where there is a shelter (not for overnight stays), a fireplace and benches by the water.
