Beskrivelse

On Björkö, Saltkråkan and Bullerbyn meet. Here you can experience a living archipelago agriculture with flower-rich pastures. You can also visit a croft and a stonemason's hut and learn more about Björkö's rich cultural history.

Islanders

On Björkö, generations of farmers have used the land for their livelihood. Agriculture has been supplemented by fishing and hunting. During the 20th century, a quarry, boat building and sawmill also employed the islanders. On the southern part of the island there is an old stonemason's hut. A man lived here in the early 1900s. On the northern part of the island is the Strömsvederna croft, where a family lived in the second half of the 19th century.

Preserved cultural landscape

Björkö's landscape is characterized by centuries of small-scale farming by the islanders. The land is still farmed today. There are open fields and pastures, and cattle graze in the forest that extends beyond the farmland. In and around the open fields are old oaks and other valuable deciduous trees.

Plants...

There is a rich flora in Björkö's open farmland. Plants favored by grazing include cat's foot, maidenhair fern and the orchid Adam and Eve. They would soon be outcompeted by tall plants if grazing ceased, as the land would then grow back.

...and birds

The bays, inlets and islands of the inner archipelago are rich in birds. Eider, grebe, black-headed gull and oystercatcher are some of the species you may encounter. Sometimes sea eagles sail by in the sky. Remember that access is prohibited on some of the small islands in the archipelago!

Below the surface

The reserve's protected bays are home to a rich variety of vegetation. Bladderwrack and other algae grow on rocks and cliffs, while eelgrass, bristle-nose grass and hairstreak grow on the clay and sandy bottoms. The underwater meadows are home, pantry and nursery for bugs and fish.
