Beskrivelse

It is not unusual for environments adjacent to large farms to have high nature values, and the Berga nature reserve is no exception. There are many exciting things to discover in Berga. Old clay roofs and embankments are surrounded by lush deciduous forests with rich insect life. Here you can also see mistletoe, one of our most unusual plants.

Valuable forest

The nature reserve is home to a number of unusual insects. They thrive here thanks to the warm climate of the area and the abundance of deciduous trees. There is also a lot of dead wood, from small twigs to hollow trunks. This wood is vital for many of the area's rarities.

Tree parasite

The rare mistletoe is a beautiful and strange plant, the only one in Sweden that parasitizes deciduous trees. Mistletoe seeds are spread by birds, especially thrushes, which like to eat the white, sticky berries. It's best to look for mistletoe in winter. Lift your eyes and look up among the bare branches of the trees. If you spot a green ball resembling a bird's nest, you have mistletoe above you.

Focus on bugs

If you want to explore bugs, summer is the best time of year. The aspen butterfly might show itself on the gravel road. Or the rhinoceros hornbill, a relative of the squirrel, which can be seen crawling around on dead trees. If you're really lucky, the six-spotted flower beetle might appear and land on a dogwood, a common plant along gravel roads.

Mud became brick

At the end of the 19th century, a brickworks was built south of Berga farm. It was the start of an industrial era that lasted until 1966. You can still see traces of the activity. In the north there are water-filled clay roofs, in the south remains of buildings and in between the old embankment.
