With its 2500 hectares, Allgunnen is one of Kalmar County's largest nature reserves. The lake, which gave the reserve its name, is largely included in the reserve along with the many larger and smaller islands.
If you want to tick off 700 wood-living beetles, this is the place to go: Hornsö in eastern Småland. Where you are now, in Allgunnens nature reserve, more than 100 rare beetles have been found so far. Some of them live most of their lives in rough hollow oaks, others in decaying old aspens. Sunlit, dead pines are also popular nesting sites. Hornsö-Allgunnen is internationally known for its wealth of wood beetles. These bugs spend most of their lives as larvae inside dead wood or tree cavities, hidden from humans. As fully formed beetles, as most of us see them, they live only a short time with a single purpose - to mate. An example is the longhorn beetle, which lives 4 years as a larva but only 3 weeks as a full-grown beetle!
One explanation for the Hornsö area's species richness is variety. There are sparse, fire-affected pine forests, old beech forests, mixed forests with centuries-old oaks and swamp forests. The climate, among the warmest we have in Sweden, also favors insect life. In many places, the forest is almost untouched, as the stony ground has been difficult to farm. Many different flowers grow in the reserve's old fields and hay meadows. The flowers are visited by lots of butterflies, some of which are rare, such as the wetland butterfly. The thickets of sloe, willow, hawthorn, roses, oxel and rowan are also very valuable for insects, which collect nectar and pollen from the flowers.
Allgunnen is one of the few large unregulated lakes in southern Sweden. Together with Alsterån, the lake forms rich aquatic environments, with a diversity of plants and animals. Otters and stone loaches are some of the inhabitants, and the rare fern safflower grows along the shoreline.
The reserve's varied nature is home to many different birds. Osprey and Eurasian bittern nest in Lake Allgunnen. Various woodpeckers and owls live in the old-growth forest, as well as goshawks, skylarks and nightjars. Where there are a lot of deciduous trees, you may see pied titmouse, lesser flycatcher and nuthatch. White-tailed godwits and common terns are found along the Alsterån river.
Allgunnen was part of the LIFE project Bridging the gap during the years 2016-2022. Follow the link below to read more about the project.
