Beskrivelse
The calcareous soils of Albrunna Alvar have been grazed for millennia. There is therefore a distinctive plant and animal life with many rare species. So walk slowly, there is much to discover here! The area is bordered to the west by the village of Albrunna, its arable land and Albrunna grove. The boundary between alvar and grove is striking. A stone wall separates the two types of land.
Stora alvaret in miniature
In front of you you have a vast alvar. A seemingly barren and monotonous landscape. But on your hike you will be able to distinguish several different habitat types. The most common is the gravel alvar, thin soils of weathered limestone. Where the limestone bedrock is covered by slightly deeper soils, there are herb-rich, dry grasslands. And in depressions, there are wet meadows and small temporary water bodies (wetlands).
The flora of Alvaret
On your hike, you may see field bindweed, tansy and alvar wormwood. They are all characteristic species of the dry grasslands of the alvar. Where the ground is wetter, meadowsweet, meadowsweet and bluebell grow. Slightly more exclusive to Albrunna alvar are spring daisy, heather, small thistle and blanket bindweed.
Bugs
Black-spotted blue butterfly, rose-winged grasshopper and silvery midge are some of the unusual bugs that thrive on the alvar. A rarity is the sheep's fescue moth. It is white, about 8 mm in size and in the Nordic countries only known from Öland. An insect that requires specialist knowledge to find!
Mushrooms
Among the mushrooms there are also many rarities such as the velvet mushroom, the root mushroom and the date waxcap. One mushroom that stands out, both figuratively and literally, is the barrel mushroom. In spring, it emerges from old horse droppings, like black-dotted tacks.
Remains from the past
Alvaret has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Here and there in the reserve there are more or less overgrown stone circles, which reveal old burial sites. In the center and in the south there are boulders with bowl pits. What these small round pits were used for still puzzles archaeologists today. Perhaps they were used in religious ceremonies or as sacrificial sites. Or as collection vessels for magical rainwater!
