16. Officerskasernen

The building was added in 1864 and was two and a half storeys high. As the number of officers increased, two wings were built. After the extension, the barracks had 40 rooms.

A violent fire on October 10, 1913 destroyed the officers' barracks. Some of the movable property was saved. The regiment was on maneuvers at the time, but the 90 or so unarmed men who were at home willingly helped with the extinguishing work.

The fire engine that was hastily transported from the Old Factory in Hultsfred was not much help, the hoses were broken.

The soldiers were urged to rescue the loot, but their main interest was the quantities of brandy they knew were stored inside. Several liters of desirable liquor were rescued and hidden somewhere in the terrain. It is said that some soldiers and Malays spent days and even weeks in a blissful stupor. Many bottles that had been hidden were stolen again by the returning conscripts.

The cause of the fire was probably overheating in one of the chimneys of the stoves.

Backamo and Skedala

The fire meant that the officers were left without accommodation. A new barracks had to be built quickly. The problem was solved by moving two buildings to Hultsfreds Slätt.

The barracks were ready for occupation in April 1914 and together contained 38 rooms. The total cost was estimated at SEK 29,400.
