Skarp-Juberget, Naturreservat

The reserve contains old forest with elements of old deciduous trees and endangered species.

Skarp-Juberget is located in Värmland's Finnish countryside, and in the southern part there are remains of a dwelling and former farmland with cairns. The forest around the residence was previously grazed and in 1954 Skarp-Juberget was last used as summer pasture for local horses.

The reserve was established in order to preserve a valuable forest mosaic consisting of moisture-rich spruce forest, wetlands and fire-affected coniferous forest, as well as so-called deciduous burns, which are the deciduous vegetation that follows a fire. In the coniferous forest there are plenty of dead trees - both lying (flames) and standing (dry bark) that benefit plants as well as animals.

Animals and plants

In some places there are also plenty of old deciduous trees such as aspen, willow, gray alder and rowan. Lung lichen and hull lichen grow luxuriantly in the area on old trunks of these deciduous trees. So far, 13 red-listed species have been noted in the reserve, half of which are linked to old deciduous trees or dead hardwood. If you are lucky, you may see capercaillie, black grouse and the northern coniferous forest's dolt, the lichen jay.
