Möllegård, Naturreservat

Möllegård is located along the Nyrebäcken stream, which is lined with approximately 100-year-old alders. In the northern part, there are valuable pastures with large and wide-crowned oaks. Wood anemone flowers here in spring. Möllegård is a popular destination for both Halmstad residents and tourists, thanks in part to the ice cream café and restaurant at the parking lot right next to the reserve. In the reserve you can get around on many easy hiking trails.

On still summer days, the Nyrebäcken stream flows slowly and the sun's rays barely find their way through the dense swamp forest that lines the banks. Many unusual lichens grow on the hundred-year-old alders. One example is the island lichen, which is only found in about fifty places in the country. The shady swamp forest is also home to many herbs, such as marsh marigold, marsh bracken and northern lichen. Many birds also make their home in the swamp forest.

Flowering wood anemone

The wood anemone blooms as early as April with large, violet flowers that then turn into characteristically hairy fruits gathered in a ball. The wood anemone thrives in open dry slopes that have been maintained for a long time by grazing or mowing. The presence of the flower in the pastures therefore tells us something about the historical land use at Möllegård. Records from the late 18th century show that meadows, grasslands with heather, areas of shifting sands and small fields surrounded the Möllegård farm.

Giants and their guests

In the northern part of the reserve, valuable natural pastures have been preserved. The oaks in the pastures have impressively large trunks as well as wide crowns. The oaks are home to many lichens, mosses and fungi. Examples of these are the scarlet spike, soot lichen, ox tongue fungus, sulphur tick and golden cap moss. The endangered Halland blackberry (Rubus hallandicus) grows in the pasture. Halland blackberry is very thorny, the leaves are green and sparsely hairy on the underside and have large, white flowers that bloom in mid-June.

Trails and picnic areas

Several paths run through the reserve. Möllegårdsslingan (green loop) is an easy loop of about 2.5 km, which takes about an hour to walk. There is also a shorter loop (yellow loop) of about 1.7 kilometers in the area. The "Prince Bertil Trail" (blue loop) also starts from Möllegård. Tables, benches and fireplaces are available in several places along the paths. The popular ice cream parlor and restaurant Riccardos is located at the reserve.
