Surtjärns domänreservat, Naturreservat

Surtjärn is a popular excursion destination in Hofors municipality, where you will find one of the most primeval forests in the municipality. In the nature reserve you can walk or walk your dog. Or hike up the mountain and look out over Lake Hyen. The lake, forest and marshes offer great experiences. Surtjärns nature reserve is located about 5 kilometers northwest of Robertsholm in Hofors municipality. The area is 7.5 hectares and is located on a slope down to the small Surtjärnen and Lake Hyen.

The area is a somewhat forgotten forest in an obscure corner of the county and municipality. The path is marked but not very well trodden. It runs under large pine trees, many of which are over 300 years old. There are trees of all ages and a lot of lying and standing dead trees, that is, precisely what characterizes a forest that has been untouched for a long time. Tufted titmice, pine titmice and sparrowhawks hop in the branches. Many small birds thrive in forests with trees of all ages, where there are plenty of protective nest trees.

The forest lies on a slope down towards Lake Hen and Surtjärn. You can sit down for a while by the small dark forest pond and breathe in the scent of pine and water hemlock. The slope and the air from the lakes make the forest damp, which is why unusual mosses such as long-limbed moss and large fox moss grow on the fallen trees.

Valuable for many

The crested moss that covers the ground with its light green, flat, pointed shoots. It is not a rare moss, but it rarely forms such dense mats, except in old-growth forests.

The pine thistle, one of the few wood fungi that can grow on living pines. It is rarely seen on the trunks until the trees are over 150 years old.
