Nysjöns fäbod

In the northern part of the municipality, there are a few mountain farms that still keep animals in the summer. One of these is Nysjöns fäbodar. Here you can walk among grazing cows that help to keep the old landscape open.

Nysjöns fäbodar is located as usual, a bit out in the forest, on a southern slope. Below the slope is the lake of the same name and on the other side of the water rises Nysjö klack.

Fäbod is a fairly old phenomenon. It arose when there was not enough food for the cattle around the villages where the land was increasingly used to grow grain. People had to go further and further into the forest to find pasture for their animals. Eventually, people were so far from home that it didn't pay to go home at night. Instead, a sheepfold was built for the animals and a small cottage for the person who would guard them, which is how the sheepfolds came into being. Despite a lot of hard work at the herdsman's house, many old herdsmen remember the summer time as a happy and good time with a lot of fellowship between the herdsmen.
