Beskrivelse

The nature reserve Södra Flymen has coniferous forest with spruce and pine and a lot of dead wood. There are also old farmland and remains of coal production.

The nature reserve is located above the highest coastline at between 90 and 100 meters above sea level. The bedrock consists of Småland granite.

Spruce forest and poor marsh

There has been no felling in the forest for over 50 years. Therefore, the forest has developed into a natural forest with a lot of dead wood. In addition to spruce and pine, oak, beech, aspen and birch grow here, and a stretch of several open to semi-open small penniless bogs, as well as small swamp forests and clear water areas, make the area varied. Poor marshes usually occur in chemically acidic soils. Different types of white mosses dominate in the bottom layer.

Habitat for beetles

The amount of dead wood, mainly spruce, is very large and therefore a large number of beetles that depend on dead wood live here. Some of these are very rare. There are also plenty of mosses, lichens and fungi. One example is the rare fire blight, which has one of its largest populations in southern Sweden.

Old arable land

Laga skifte was carried out in 1856. The area was then divided into Kohagen, Petter Månfors slåttarehage with Slåttarehagsåkern, Marken and Strågesvrå. It is not clear whether there was forest in the area at that time.

However, the land was uninteresting as farmland. Around Slåttarehagsåkern there is still semi-open land with plants that thrive there, such as cowslip, hay rattle, maidenhair fern, daisy and bluebell.

The flowers are important for foraging wood beetles from the surrounding forest. The hay meadow is now becoming overgrown with spruce and the area will be kept open by mowing.

Other traces of cultural history include cairns, stone walls, old roads and paths. There is a coal bed in the eastern part of the area.
