Beskrivelse
The nature reserve consists of part of the Bräkneån valley. At Hålabäck, the Bräkneån meanders through the hay meadows on the wide bottom of the valley between wooded slopes.
The nature reserve extends along Bräkneån for a distance of 1.8 km and is located about 5 kilometers west of Backaryd. Vildmarksleden, a hiking and biking trail through the northern part of Ronneby municipality, passes through the reserve as a hiking trail.
Blekinge's largest hayfield
In the forest area, the valley is characterized by a very strongly marked topography. The valley widens at the intersection with other rift valleys. The widening is most evident in Hålabäck where the wide valley floor is the site of the largest and most prominent haymaking environment in the river valley and Blekinge. The moist meadows are dominated by the grass species browntop. The meadows have been used for haymaking continuously for more than 200 years.
Adjacent to the river and the meadows are swamp forest, mixed forest dominated by deciduous trees and coniferous forest with interesting plant and animal life.
Bräkneån and Äskan
The river meanders, which means that the river meanders through a flat landscape created by erosion in the outer curves of the river and sedimentation in the inner curves. The river is mainly calm flowing, but there is a short swift current in the north-western part of the reserve and a current in the middle of the reserve.
The southwestern part of the reserve includes a small part of the nutrient-poor lake Äskan and the lake's outlet into Bräkneån. The old river channel with Lake Äskan is of great geological value. Ice river sediments are deposited there. Only the southernmost part of the river channel is included in the reserve, and there the river formation is a clear example of ice river deposits.
Cultural-historical traces
The former small-scale farming and the older forms of cultivation with a mosaic type of farming characterize the valley floor. In addition to the moors, there are old fields that are now tree-covered pastures. There are many traces of cultural history and ancient remains. Within the area there are house foundations, crofts, fossil farmland, stone walls and a tarred valley with a tarred channel.
