Stensö

Stensö is a scenic peninsula and one of Kalmar's most popular outdoor areas. Here you can exercise, swim, barbecue and just enjoy the tranquillity of nature. During the summer months, many are also attracted by the peninsula's range of activities. There is everything from a snorkeling trail and kayak and SUP rentals to adventure golf and a high-altitude course.

For those who want to exercise, there are three marked trails in lengths between three and six kilometers. The two shorter loops are equipped with lighted trails. When you're here, take the opportunity to take part in the tip walk if it's on. In winter, ski trails are also organized on parts of the exercise trail.

Varied nature

Stensö has been used as grazing land for several hundred years and the western side of the island is still grazed. Today, most of Stensö consists of a mixture of oak, birch and aspen forests, dry meadows with grass and juniper bushes and a pine forest. There are also windswept pebble and sandy beaches and sheltered bays with meadows and tall reeds.

Traces from the past

For those interested in history, there are exciting traces to discover. On Stensö cape there is a large granite block as a monument to Gustav Vasa having landed here in 1520 and a memorial stone from Louis XVIII's visit to Kalmar in 1804. We are also reminded of the Danish siege of Kalmar, as there are remains of a 17th-century redoubt on the canal that borders the peninsula to the north.

Accessibility

Stensö has exercise trails of three different lengths, all of which are gravel. The six-kilometer exercise trail goes all the way out to the southern headland. On the southern part of Stensö there is another gravel path in the middle of the peninsula that leads out to the headland. Some stretches are hilly, mainly on the western side of Stensö. A number of benches are placed along the tracks.
