**The wetlands in Kalmar consist of recreated aquatic environments in nature with the aim of helping wildlife and at the same time cleaning the water.
In western Kalmar, near the Smedby district, there is an old trotting track (now used for horse riding) on a site that was historically a wetland.
A super spa for fish and birds
At 8 hectares, the wetland is the largest urban wetland created in the last 25 years. In 2024, Kalmar municipality restored the wetland while the riding track was adapted for a higher water level. This means that you can walk and ride right through the wetland.
An important purpose of the wetland is to clean water from arable land. Therefore, peninsulas and embankments were built into the wetland to extend the water's path before it leaves the area. The longer it takes for the water to pass through the wetland, the better it will be purified.
In addition to purification, the wetland also serves as a spawning ground for fish, mainly perch and pike. An important measure for the fish stocks of the Baltic Sea.
Thanks to its accessibility and location close to the community and the school, the wetland can be used for recreation and education. Just be careful not to disturb animal and bird life, especially during the breeding season.
Birdlife considerations and fishing bans
Please show consideration by keeping your distance from the wetland and moving calmly in the area during the period March 15 - July 15 when birds are particularly sensitive due to nesting. Please note that fishing is prohibited in all wetlands, ponds and in Törnebybäcken. Fishing is prohibited in order not to disturb the purification capacity of the wetland and to protect the fish that spawn at the outlet of the dam.
