Utvandrarleden (The Emigrant Trail) follows the western edge of Lake Löften between Moshult and Långasjö. Just after passing the farms Hamburg, Nybygget, and Löftesholm, you wander along Salebodaåsen, surrounded by water on both sides. Unfortunately, from the trail, you can only catch glimpses of the water, and it’s difficult to reach the waterline, but from a bird’s-eye view, a magical landscape unfolds around you. Further south, mossy grounds alternate in a moist landscape that is incredibly important for both the environment and the climate. The farm Hamburg lies secluded along the western edge of Löften, a solitary farm under the village of Bredalycke located at the crest of Salebodaåsen. Löften is part of the Lyckeby River’s drainage area, and there are several traditional hay meadows and moss cultivations that have been farmed using old methods up until the 1990s. Today, modern organic farming is practiced on the property. In the late 1920s, Lake Löften was lowered, creating entirely new agricultural opportunities. The road between Bredalycke village and Hamburg essentially follows the same route as in the 19th century. Nowadays, the road (and the trail) continues towards Harebo village, a stretch likely established in the late 1880s when the apartment buildings Nybygget and Löftesholm were constructed on Harebo’s land. Apartment ownership means that the tenant owns the buildings but leases the land—a form of ownership that was also common in the mountainous regions.
