Kuvaus

Around the turn of the 20th century, three railway lines met at Värnamo: Halmstad─Nässjö railway, opened at Värnamo in 1877 with a new station building, Skåne─Småland railway, opened in 1899, and Borås─Alvesta railway, opened in 1902. At the same time, a station building serving all three lines was inaugurated. It was built in a National Romantic style, inspired by older manor houses and forts.

Opposite the station building was the hotel Värnamo Järnvägshotell.

The building next to the station was originally erected for the Skåne─Småland railway, but was never used as a station building. Instead, Värnamo Post Office was located here between 1899 and 1974. The building, inspired by Skåne half-timbered houses with neo-Gothic features, was designed by the architect Alfred Hellerström.

Faktat

This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.

The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
