The island of Långören in Karlskrona’s eastern archipelago is like a living museum of times gone by as the island was an island of pilots. The house and equipment are still there today in their original condition. The system of pilots who steered vessels through the local waters, and even over longer distances, goes back to the Middle Ages. The pilot station on Långören was established in the early eighteenth century when it was the chief pilot station for the eastern archipelago of Karlskrona. The station consisted of a house where the chief pilot lived with his family. In 1877–78 the current pilot’s house was built, comprising a watch room, pilot’s lookout and a house for the chief pilot. From 1888 when the then Swedish Pilotage Service was responsible for providing a schoolroom and teacher’s house, these were also housed in the building. Today visitors can stay in the apartment in the house, which is furnished to simple youth hostel standard. The pilot’s house is open from April to September and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. Source: Blekinge County Administrative Board and Visit Blekinge
