Welcome to Avaskär. Once the easternmost town in Denmark. “That can’t be right”, you might think when you get here. “There’s nothing here?” This is true, but the little medieval town first mentioned in 1350, stood here until 1599 when Danish King Christian IV decided to found Kristianopel nearby. Today where the old town used to stand is just a patch of grass. Almost nothing of the town is visible above ground. However, many archaeological digs have been carried out at the site. There is evidence of a town existing here as early as the twelfth century and of a chapel that was expanded into a church. Graves, bones, wells, foundations of houses, silver coins, glass fragments and china have all been found here. In 1563–1570 the Swedes burned Avaskär down for the last time in a long line of devastating attacks. The town raised itself out of the ashes but it was insufficiently modern for the time, with virtually no defences. Source: Kulturlandskapetblekinge
