Balsberget, besöksplats i Vattenriket

Beech forest, cave and views. Balsberget offers miles of views and takes you deep into the mountain. In spring, the beech forest welcomes you with newly sprouted greenery. In the fall, it smells of fallen leaves and mushrooms.

At the top of Balsberget you are 97 meters above sea level. The place offers miles of views of Råbelövssjön and Kristianstadsslätten all the way down to Stenshuvud.

Some ancient oaks struggle in the cracks of the rocks at the height. Dead tree trunks indicate that this is an area where insects thrive. On the way down from the top, the forest becomes wetter and more lush. The straight trunks of the beech forest rise like pillars to the sky.

Balsberget forest is lovely to visit all year round. From the pea-green, newly emerged leaves in spring to the muted palette of brown and red colors in autumn. Many fungi thrive in the calcareous, loamy soil of the slopes, both rare and beautiful species and edible fungi.

Balsberget is located in the borderland between the chalk bedrock of the plain and the bedrock area in the north. Here you will find one of Skåne's largest cave systems with halls and passages of more than 200 meters. The largest rooms are 35 meters long and five meters high! In summer, you can enter with a key that you borrow from Råbelöv's estate 044 - 754 40. In winter, bats hibernate in the cave. The cave is called the Pork Pit because it was used as a food store during the Danish-Swedish wars.

In the forest you can see mammals such as roe deer, fallow deer and wild boar and birds such as bees, several species of woodpeckers, green warblers and stone curlews.
