Södviken and Vässby fjärd are home to some of Öland's most beautiful lakes. Here, Ölanders have had animals grazing for thousands of years. Together with the shallow bays, the open grasslands and shore meadows offer perfect habitats for birds. Many different kinds of flowers also thrive in this special environment.
Lakeside meadows
Sjömarker is the traditional name for the low-lying pastures that line the east coast of Öland. The width varies between a hundred meters and kilometers. Nowhere else in Sweden are there such large and continuous pastures near the coast. The people of Öland have been grazing their animals on the lakes since at least the early Iron Age, i.e. for at least 2500 years.
Rich flora and fauna
The Lakeland has a very rich plant and animal life, not least in terms of birds. Large flocks of ducks, geese and waders rest during spring and fall. Breeding birds include oystercatchers, redshanks, lapwings, wigeons and eiders. There are also many different plants that are only found on well-grazed land, such as wild clover, goose grass, coastal arum and dwarf arum. A special type of vegetation is also found on the seaweed beds that wash up along the shores.
Sea sheds on Skälgrund
On Själgrund, the large peninsula to the east, there are six boathouses that bear witness to the fishing traditions of the area. Two of them are built of limestone and may date back to the 18th century.

In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- During April 1 - July 31, you are not allowed to be in the areas marked on the map that you can see further down the page, or on site in the reserve.
- Drive a motorized vehicle.
- Drive a motorboat or other motorized craft in the water area at a speed greater than 5 knots.
- Drive or land a hovercraft, hydrocopter, low-flying aircraft or similar craft.
- Driving a personal watercraft.
- Park a vehicle, caravan or trailer in a place other than designated parking spaces.
- Mooring or anchoring a boat in a place other than designated places.
- Hunting, killing, capturing or harming wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds.
- remove or damage eggs or nests
- Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
- Bring a dog, or other animal, that is not on a leash.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Make a fire anywhere other than in designated areas.
- digging or pulling up plants or parts of plants by the roots
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct scientific research.
If you have received permission from the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Carry out commercial activities.
Full regulations
D. Regulations under Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code, on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general.
Pursuant to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code, on the right to travel and stay in the reserve, in addition to what otherwise applies, it is prohibited to:
- enter or stay within the area marked on the attached decision map, during the period 1.4 - 31.7,
- drive motor vehicles other than for agricultural purposes
- operate a motorboat or other motorized craft at a speed exceeding 5 knots
- operate a hovercraft, hydrocopter, jet ski or similar craft
- set up a motor vehicle, caravan, trailer or moor or anchor a boat other than in specially designated places,
- hunt, kill, capture or injure wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds, remove or damage eggs or nests or otherwise disturb wildlife
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet
- put up a board, sign, placard, poster or similar device or make an inscription
- light a fire (other than in specially designated places)
- digging or pulling up vascular plants by the roots
- carry out scientific research without consulting the county administrative board
- carry out commercial activities without the permission of the county administrative board. This also applies to commercial hunting.
