Beskrivelse
Parts of the Skallflohålen nature reserve are known as limestone coniferous forest. It is so called because it grows on calcareous soil. Spruce dominates and there are trees here that are between 120 and 150 years old. There is also some old pine (especially in the north) and occasional birch, willow and aspen.
Limestone old-growth forests often have even more diversity and variety than other old-growth forests. The soil beneath the trees is home to many species favoring lime. Wood anemone, witch hazel, bracken fern, wild violet, cranesbill, thistle, wood vetch and guckusko are some examples. The trees are old and many bear traces of forest fire in their bark.

Rutevejledning
Från Östersund åker man väg 87 österut till Stugun med ett avstånd på cirka 52 kilometer. Efter ytterligare cirka 19 kilometer är man framme vid väg 344 som går norrut med en hänvisningsskylt Överammer och Skyttmon. Kör denna väg cirka 4,2 kilometer och sväng därefter till vänster. Kör fram till Skyttmon och ytterligare cirka 10 kilometer fram till en skogsbilväg. Sväng höger och kör cirka 600 meter så är man framme vid naturreservatet.
Regler
Welcome to Skallflohålen. Please note that within the nature reserve it is not allowed to:
- capture, disturb or harm mammals, birds, frogs and reptiles, as well as damage their nests and spawning grounds or collect eggs,
- pick and collect species of any kind, except berries and edible mushrooms
- climbing nest trees or deliberately staying closer than 100 meters to a bird of prey's nest, lair or burrow
- damaging the ground, boulders, vegetation, dry trees or other dead wood
- make fires, other than with firewood, and
- drive a motorized vehicle off-road.
