Beskrivelse

The site of Rombovallen is today an old burial ground from the 11th century. Research has revealed that there was also a soul cabin here, for rest and relaxation.

Past Lofsdalen runs an old pilgrimage route called Romboleden, a road at least 1000 years old that runs from Mälardalen up to Nidaros (Trondheim). In the 1030s, Olav Haraldsson died in a battle at Stiklastad near Trondheim. Olav had set out to Christianize the country during his time as king of Norway. He was forced to flee, but after a vision urging him to return to complete the work, he died before he arrived. It was rumored that miracles took place around his body. Olav was declared a saint and crowds of people flocked to his grave. The reasons were varied: cures, healing from diseases and ailments, etc. This old road passes through this place.

In 1997 a large project called "Pilgrim -97" was started, led by Tage Persson from Funäsdalen. The aim was to upgrade the pilgrimage routes in Jämtland-Härjedalen and to invest in pilgrimages.

As part of the "Pilgrim -97" project, the pilgrimage hut in Rombovallen was built. The aim was to rebuild a pilgrim's hut on Rombovallen. The Church of Sweden appreciated the idea of rebuilding a pilgrim's hut in an old building and provided 100 trees cut down and driven to the road. Archaeologist Anders Hansson showed where the cabin would stand and in July 1997 the site was inaugurated.

The place Rombovallen with its soul cabin has been and is very well visited. Church services, weddings, association meetings, family reunions, genealogy meetings, poetry evenings, storytelling evenings and barbecue evenings are organized here. It is also possible to stay overnight. But we recommend a more comfortable option in Lofsdalen. This may be necessary if you plan to hike across the mountain.

There is a shelter, fireplace and outdoor toilet at Rombovallen. It is possible to stay overnight in the cabin, but it is more comfortable to stay in Lofsdalen.

Fakta

Rombovallen is an old medieval cemetery. According to legend, a priest and a judge perished and are buried here. It was strictly enforced that if any pilgrim died during the pilgrimage, they were to be buried at the place of death and all property brought with them buried with him. It is said that a fine monk, "St. Olaf's servant," could then come and dig up and "seize the treasures."

Adjacent to the cemetery, there was a chaplain's cottage here in the Middle Ages for the protection and rest of pilgrims.

In a warrant from 1685, Svän Brÿnielsson from Lafzdahlen describes Rombovallen; "an old cemetery or bower, as the country people called it, was for a long time back set up and built in square, some of the country people wanted to pretend that in the past when the papal religion was in Norway and Sweden several would travel from Trundhem and Norway this way to Herjeådalen, when they wanted to hold their Pelegrim journeys, and those who on the same journey had perished of hunger or cold, would be buried in the same cemetery."

Hülphers writes in 1777: "a stone cemetery at Hoverken as the remains of a burial place, where a large cross was once erected.
