Gruvhålen på Vargtjärnsstöten

Follow the orange-marked trail towards Bäckevallen/Postvallen from the parking lot. Continue up towards the mining holes along a beautiful mountain stream in the valley between Stortuvan and Vargtjärnsstöten and further over marshland with beautiful orchids and meadow wool.

You can visit a number of mine holes in the area that were in use from 1739 to 1757. Copper was mined there and then transported down to the Ljungdalen smelting works. The smelted ore was then transported down to Ljusnedals mill and on to Falun, Hudiksvall and Stockholm. When the smelter was closed down, a saw and a mill were built there, which was driven by water wheels until 1920. Today, the village sawmill is in the same place. When you have finished walking between the mine holes, take the same route back.

The mountains are a cultural landscape and reindeer herding takes place in several places. Four samebys operate in Berg municipality. Visitor pressure in the mountains is increasing and with it the risk of impact on reindeer husbandry. As a visitor to the mountains, it is important that you show consideration and know how you should act where reindeer herding takes place.

Keep this in mind when you are in the mountains:

• Always leave the reindeer alone. If you come across reindeer, take a wide detour around or sit down quietly and wait for them to pass.
• Keep your dog on a leash where there are reindeer. A loose dog can cause great disturbance and harm to the reindeer and reindeer herding work.
• Follow marked trails.
• Avoid disturbing reindeer at snow camps, they stay there to protect themselves from heat and troublesome insects.
• Avoid camping in lush valleys.
• Cycle on roads and paths intended for cycling.
