Blomsterstigen (vandringsled, Storlien)

Start/finish

You can start your hike at Högfjällshotellet or at the lower parking lot just north of the railway station. Signs with "Blomsterstigen" show you the way to paths that take you to the portal a bit up the mountain. Blomsterstigen is a circular trail, which means that you will finish at the same place you started.

Experience along the trail

Dr. Ernst Westerlund, a doctor in Enköping 1867-1924, was a pioneer in the art of self-healing and the importance of lifestyle for health. After the railway was opened in Storlien in 1882, he had his summer practice there and Storlien became known as a climatic health resort.

From 1886, when the "New Hotel" was completed, guests stayed at the Selander family hotel. It was then located on the plateau north of the station where "Fjäll-Lyorna" stands today. It has been called the Norwegian Hotel, the New Hotel, Storlien Sanatorium, Storlien Guest House and from 1905 Högfjällspensionatet.

The flower trail was laid out in 1890. The doctor introduced a system of benches to rest on along the way up to the top. Many benches were donated by satisfied patients and given names.

The path around Wolf Gorge is paved. You were instructed to go to a particular bench. Later, on the doctor's orders, a stone was to be carried up and placed in the place now known as the Ernstkumlet. It is likely that the cairn was built with some of these stones. Some of the flowers you can find along the flower path are Mountain Bride, Virgin Mary's Keys, Lapp's heather, Rosehip, Rosling, White-lipped Ranunculus, Goldenrod, Green Hyssop and Mountain Slime.

On your feet

This trail is mostly in mountainous terrain. Training shoes with a rough sole or hiking boots are preferable.

Dog

Dogs are of course welcome, but remember to keep them on a leash and to remove poop that ends up where someone else may accidentally walk in it.

Garbage

Everything that is taken up on the trip must also be taken back again. If you have the opportunity, feel free to carry more garbage home than you took out with you.

Recommended period

This trail runs partly in areas that are sensitive when the ground is wet. Avoid the trail during snow melt and also when it has rained a lot.

Parking is available at the trailhead, just north of the railway station.

The historic trailhead is marked with a portal a bit up the mountain where connecting trails go both from Högfjällshotellet and the parking lot just north of the railway station. On the right side just at the entrance to the parking lot you will find the lower connecting path, by the small shed. A sign with "Blomsterstigen" shows the way.
