Beskrivelse
Here you can wander among old spruces. They grow best in damp hollows where spring flows provide nutrients. There, the spruces can be so thick that you can barely reach around the trunk. The oldest spruces here are around 170 years old.
In the far west you can find plants that indicate lime in the soil. It is mainly wreathwort, a relative of the lily of the valley, that can be seen. But there is also a special moss that grows where there is lime. It is called wreath moss.
On leaner ground, you can find pine trees that are 250-400 years old. Many of them have traces of fire in their bark, known as fire rings.
When the forest is left to live in peace and quiet, sooner or later it dies, falls to the ground and slowly decomposes into mulch. If you look closely at the dead tree trunks, you will find mosses, lichens and wood fungi. In the dead wood, a range of insects thrive to be, eat and live. And then the birds soon come looking for the insects.
In the dead parts of the tree, life continues to flourish for many different organisms.
Around the nature reserve there are a few disused shepherd's huts. Although they are no longer in use, the grazing animals had an impact on the openness of the forest at the time. One of the reasons why there is so much deciduous forest in the nature reserve is probably that the forest has been more open to light due to grazing.

Söderifrån kör man via Överhogdal norrut längs väg E45 i cirka 12 kilometer där man svänger av till vänster mot Sörtjärn. Om man kommer norrifrån längs E45 så är denna avfart 13 kilometer från Rätansbyn. Man kör i cirka 6 kilometer mot Sörtjärn. Precis innan man kommer in i byn Sörtjärn så svänger man höger in på en mindre väg som passerar över vattendraget Hoan. Denna väg följer man i cirka 2 kilometer där man tar av på väg åt höger. Denna väg följer man i cirka 6 kilometer så kommer man till entrén. Observera att vägen kan vara bommad efter 3 kilometer.
Regler
Welcome to Björnberget. Keep in mind that it is not allowed in the reserve:
- pick and collect species of any kind, with the exception of berries and edible mushrooms,
- climbing trees, staying near a bird of prey's nest, lair or pot, collecting animals or otherwise deliberately damaging or disturbing wildlife,
- damaging the ground, boulders, vegetation, dry trees or other dead wood
- make fires, other than with firewood brought in
- drive a motorized vehicle in terrain on bare ground.
Without the permission of the County Administrative Board, it is forbidden to:
- carry out or conduct organized outdoor activities, competitions, camp activities, military exercises or other organized events.
Other rules apply if you want to conduct any kind of activity in the area, see the current reserve decision for full regulations. There may also be other laws to take into account, such as the Reindeer Husbandry Act.
