Västra Hästholmens fästning

Västra Hästholmen has been fortified since the nineteenth century and at its height accommodated 248 men plus officers. The fort was decommissioned in 1969, after which it served as a mobilisation store during the Cold War until the 1980s. The canal through the fort, which was blasted for safety reasons is today mainly used by canoeists. (Remember that the island and the fort remain private land. It is not permitted to land on Hästholmen.)
