Axelstorps skogar, Naturreservat

Söder om Båstad, på Hallandsåsens nordvästra sluttning, ligger naturreservatet Axelstorps skogar. Här möts du av bokskog med djupa bäckraviner och på sina håll går urberget i dagen. I skogen gömmer sig dessutom stenrösen och små terrassformade åkrar från förhistorisk tid. Upplev området genom den 9 km långa Axelstorpsslingan som börjar nere i Båstad och som även passerar reservatet Lyadalen i närheten.

Welcome to Axelstorps skogar Nature Reserve

The nature reserve Axelstorps Skogar (Axelstorp's Woodland) is on the north-west slope of Hallandsåsen (a high horst ridge that interrupts the flat landscape), only two kilometres from Båstad. A footpath starting in Båstad takes you through a landscape that carries memories of the agriculture that has taken place here since the Bronze Age. Water rushes down the steep slope towards the Sinarp valley through undisturbed woodlands and steep ravines.

The remains of man's work with the earth, from the Bronze Age onwards, can be found on Hallandsåsen. In the eastern parts of the reserve, you can see traces of ancient agriculture in the form of cairns and terraces where there were once fields. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area around Axeltorp was part of the open agricultural landscape, with fields and meadows.

Back then, the agricultural landscape was often varied, with a mosaic of trees, bushes and grassland. Trees and bushes grew in the meadows and the woodlands were filled with clearings in which livestock grazed. In the woodland that has grown up around them, we can, today, find huge oaks that once spread out their branches over pasture. Only those parts that were once fields are still open and now being used for pasture and arable farming. The ravines have always been wooded as they were hard to use for agriculture.

Brown trout live well in the meandering stream Axelstorpsbäcken, eating Caddisfly and Stonefly Larvae. The Grey Wagtail and White-throated Dipper also appreciate the rich supply of larvae and, if you're lucky, you may even see one of them perching on a rock in the water.

The bird life in Axelstorps Skogar is diverse and exciting. Many different species breed in the varied woodland, and on early summer days, if you stop to look around and listen, you can see and hear woodpeckers, Treecreepers and Stock Doves.

A walk along Axelstorpsslingan, a path that starts in Båstad, offers both natural and cultural experiences. There are many traces of the presence of humans in this landscape. You will find the remains of many mill races and ponds from the time when water from the streams was used for drive mills.
