Vulkanen Rallate Klippan

The Rallate volcano is hidden on the edge of Söderåsen National Park.

What can now be seen of Rallate is the volcano's outlet channel where the basaltic magma moved upwards. As the magma cooled, it solidified and formed pillars of basalt, a hard and resistant rock that resisted weathering. As basaltic magma solidifies, the volume of the rock decreases and it fractures in a regular pattern towards the coldest surface.

Where the rock is exposed, hundreds of pentagonal and hexagonal basalt pillars are visible today, about 2-3 decimeters in diameter and 1 meter long. The pillars lie in a depression, inclined at a diagonal and contrast strongly with the surrounding forest. Rallate is a strange and unexpected place in Söderåsen National Park well worth a short visit.
