Virserums möbelindustrimuseum

The museum is a living museum. The museum is a replica of a furniture factory from the 1920s. The old machines are belt driven and the shafts in the ceiling are driven by the large water wheel. The oldest machine is from 1895. Several of the machines are manufactured in Hjortöströms, located just outside Virserum.

In the 1940s there were around forty manufacturers in the area. Virserum was then one of the country's major furniture metropolises. Artisanal production of high quality oak furniture in small batches was the village's strength, but also became its downfall.

The museum also shows how sculptors, upholsterers and farmers worked. Upstairs is a large exhibition of furniture made in Virserum. The museum also includes a smithy and a sawmill.

Today there is no furniture industry left in Virserum. The last factory closed down in winter 2008.
