Church of the Holy Trinity - Inside

Holy Trinity Church is adorned with beautiful murals on the south side depicting various themes. They were probably painted by Magnus Håkansson in the 15th century. Each vault has its own theme: the first depicts the gates of heaven and hell, the second shows some martyrs, the third tells of the different ways in which the martyrs were brought to life, the penultimate depicts the story of the suffering of Jesus Christ. And the last one is about St. Francis, whose followers built this church. The images of St. Francis are identical to those in Assisi, so the artist must have had a lot of knowledge about his history. The beautiful chandeliers in the ceiling are gifts to the church, they are made of brass and they are the largest in Sweden, perhaps even in the Nordic countries and were probably made in Northern Germany. They are commissioned work and not war booty. The Baroque-style pulpit was carved by the court sculptor Buckard Precht in 1736. It is thus related to the pulpits in Uppsala Cathedral and Storkyrkan in Stockholm. The pulpit is very detailed and cost as much as 6000 daler silver coins, a considerable sum. And it is said that the two families who donated most of the money wanted their names engraved and clearly visible. But they had to settle for a small shield over the door. The newest decoration in the church is the Triumphal Cross hanging from the ceiling before the choir. It was made by Kjell Södergren in 1980 and on the back of it you can read Francis' peace greeting Pax et Bonum - Peace and all good, a greeting we have taken to our hearts in Arboga. In the chancel are the epitaphs and one of the church's three baptismal fonts. The baptismal font was made by Hans Clason Arent stonemason in 1666. The other two are down by the wall on either side of the door. The oldest is from the 11th century and was found under the floor during a restoration. The altarpiece is from the 17th century, there was an older one from the 15th century but it was decided to sell it and only a few images remain. The newer one is richly carved and lavish and is probably North German.
