Skogmossen, Naturreservat

Fine pine-dominated forest-marsh mosaic with high tree age.

The Skogmossen nature reserve is an area consisting mainly of older pine forest and wetland. The sparse pine forest on the bog with abundant dead wood and sunny, warm glades is both a representative and almost unique example of what old natural forests on pine bogs look like in the southern part of Värmland.

The forest on the bog is as a whole natural forest-like and has plenty of both late-growing trees and really large old stands.

Animals and plants

Due to the presence of structures such as flames, dry branches and old trees, the natural forest has good conditions for hosting threatened and rare species that belong to this environment.

The pine knotweed grows on some of the old stands on the bog and on old pines left on the rocky areas. In addition to the pine thistle, there are rare species such as the moth fungus and the dropwort fungus.
