Great birdwatching all year round

In spring, Pulken nature reserve is Kristianstadsbygden's main site for roosting cranes, but the meadows have a rich bird life all year round. In winter, large flocks of geese with several different species are often seen in the surrounding fields and sea and golden eagles regularly patrol the area. In spring, large numbers of ducks gather on the floods. Mallard and teal are usually the most numerous ducks, but also shoveler, teal and pintail rest in smaller numbers. During the breeding season, lapwings, redshanks and curlews, yellow eagles and snipe are seen. Brown harriers that nest in the reeds of Lake Yngsjön often hunt over the area.

Pulken - the cranes' Bed & Breakfast

The air sounds of trumpeting cranes. At Pulken they unfold their legs and go down to land. On the feeding field at the bird tower they can eat and rest. To the delight of everyone who wants to enjoy the dance. The arrival of the cranes is a long-awaited sign of spring. At the end of March and beginning of April, thousands of them flock to Pulken. It's a feast for both cranes and birdwatchers. The cranes are fed in a field next to the bird tower. In this way, the farmers' spring sowing is spared. At dusk, they fly to the wetland. There they can sleep safely, protected from the fox. There is something special about these stately birds, which can reach 1.3 meters in height. When they come flying, it's as if they've brought spring with them.

A sure sign of spring

Cranes spend the winters in southern Europe, and in February they start their journey north to breed. They fly north over France and Germany and cross the Baltic Sea before reaching Pulken. The bird tower is a good place to study their funny antics. Watch carefully when they land - they like to take a little leap, as part of the nesting process and to strengthen family ties. The cranes stay for a few days. A few stay to nest, but most fly on north. In September, they start their journey south to their wintering grounds in the wetlands of Spain. Accessibility: Visitors with a disabled permit can park right next to the outdoor museum. The ramp up to the upper part of the platform is 36 meters long in total, divided into five sections with a rest area in between.
