Beskrivelse
The reserve preserves dead wood that gives life and makes it particularly interesting for lichens, fungi, mosses, wood insects and birds.
The Kvickneåsen nature reserve consists of older spruce forest with elements of old aspens and birches. The reserve has one of the county's largest key biotopes of just under 70 hectares. The rich presence of coarse deciduous trees and dead wood, both in the form of standing sunlit dying trees and dry trees and shaded moist, lying, dead trees, makes Kvickneåsarna particularly interesting for lichens, fungi, mosses, wood insects and birds.
The reserve was established to preserve the valuable habitat of western taiga with significant elements of old deciduous trees, so that the area will provide conditions for the long-term conservation of threatened and rare species in the landscape and secure habitats for the three-toed woodpecker and capercaillie. The aim is also to make the area accessible to the public so that visitors can see and experience the area's habitats.
Animals and plants
Sun-warmed tree trunks are full of insect larvae. They become food for woodpeckers, who can peck them out from inside the wood. At this time of spring, visitors are greeted by the long-drawn-out drumming of the woodpecker. It is one of several species of woodpeckers that can be seen here. There are also plenty of capercaillie, as there are several swamp forest areas in the reserve where the capercaillie can raise its chicks. In the nutrient-rich droughts, you can see discerning flowers such as cornflower, spring pea and dwarf horsetail. To date, 17 red-listed species have been observed in the reserve, most of them dependent on aspen or dead spruce wood.
