The path in Hästhagen-Kilholmen is closed until further notice
The County Administrative Board will not maintain the path in Hästhagen-Kilholmen until further notice, as it is dangerous for visitors to walk on the path. The County Administrative Board also advises you not to visit the nature reserve.
As a result of the dry summer of 2018 and infestation of spruce bark beetle, there are a number of dead spruces in the reserve. Some of these spruces have already fallen over and are lying like pegs in the forest and across the path. As the dead spruces decompose, they become more brittle and can fall without warning even on a day with calm weather.
Beskrivelse
On a headland in Norrsjön, not far from Bennebols mill, lies a lush mixed forest with many large deciduous trees. This is a place for those who particularly like grove plants such as musk madder, wild garlic and woodland knotweed.
The deciduous forest by the shore consists of oak, lime, ash and aspen, but there are also elm, birch and hazel. Among these deciduous trees thrive the many rare grove plants. The coarse, old trees are also good nesting sites for many bird species, such as the lesser spotted woodpecker.
The area has fairly large boulders and wetlands, but also drier rocky areas. In ancient times, all natural resources were utilized for daily sustenance. Animals were grazed in the forest, while wetlands and meadows were used for haymaking. Today, nature has largely reclaimed the culturally influenced landscape.
A large number of species have been found in the reserve, indicating high nature values. Many of them are fungi and beetles that need old, coarse aspens, oaks and spruces. The terrain is quite inaccessible, but there is a path that runs through the area and shows the way between boulders and wetlands.
Right next to the parking lot is the Bennebols mill. The mill was active for 200 years until it closed in 1884. Several of the old buildings are still standing and there are information signs telling the history of the mill.

Hästhagen-Kilholmen is located 4.5 km northeast of Uppsala, between Bennebols and Vällnora mills. You can get here from the south by following road 282 to Knutby. In Knutby, turn left onto Bladåkersvägen and follow it for about 5 km. Turn right where there are signs for Bennebol and Vällnora. A bit after Vällnora mill is the reserve on the right side.
You can also take road 288 from Uppsala towards Östhammar. When you reach Lejsta, turn onto Hallstaviksvägen (road 273). After passing Lake Vällen, turn right towards Vällnora and Bennebols bruk. After about 7 km you have Hästhagen-Kilholmen on your left.
Forskrifter
In the reserve it is forbidden to:
- dig, hoe or otherwise damage the soil surface,
- break branches, cut down or otherwise damage living or dead trees and shrubs, dig up or pick flowers, grasses, mosses, fungi, lichens or in any other way remove or damage plants or plant parts of any kind, with the exception of picking edible mushrooms and berries,
- capture or abduct animals, remove eggs or nests or deliberately disturb animal life,
- riding a horse
- camping,
- making fires
- bring dogs or other pets that are not leashed
- drive a motorized vehicle,
- organize orienteering activities or marked trails.
Regulations and prohibitions in laws and other statutes apply in addition to this.
