In the basin between the mountains, the forest becomes more dense. The spruce forest here is really old, covered in hanging lichen. A path leads into the reserve from the turning area where the road ends.

The spruce forest in this area is what is known as a natural forest. In other words, a forest that has been allowed to remain undisturbed for a long time. There are plenty of structures here that you would expect to find in a really old forest. These include: old trees, trees of various areas, variation between open, bright areas and dense, darker parts, dead trees of many different sizes and ages, both upright dead trees and those that have fallen to the ground.
