Handlinger

Beskrivelse

The beaches and rolling, tree-covered dunes are ideal for swimming, hiking and horseback riding. The dunes are home to the peculiar species of ant lion or ant lion dragonfly as it is actually called. A few windswept eel huts remain on the beach. These small houses are reminiscent of the formerly important eel fishing along Skåne's east coast. Södra Äspet is a municipal nature reserve just south of Åhus.

Scanian eel fishing and pine forest as protection against flying sand

The pine forest along the beaches was planted as early as the 19th century to prevent sand drift. Today, the pine trees are old but still prevent drifting sand from drifting in and settling on fields and pastures. Adjacent to the reserve there are buildings, both residential and holiday homes. And closest to the sea are some eel sheds that testify to a long tradition of eel fishing along the east coast of Skåne. In the eel sheds, or eel huts as they were also called, eel fishermen stored their gear and took shelter from the weather. The huts are of great cultural-historical value along the "eel coast" that stretches from Åhus down to Stenshuvud Link to another website.

Majestic pines and bare sun-warmed sand

Among the tree-covered dunes in the reserve are small dunes of bare sand. Two different species of what we call ant lions live here. One, the spotted ant lion, hides its traps under the cover of moss and pine roots. The other, the small ant lion, lives in the bare, sun-warmed sand. Many species live in Södra Äspet that are dependent on the open, sunlit sandy patches in the pine forest. There are also some jewels hiding among the pines, the unusual purple smelling weed and the rare sweet flower yarrow.

The oldest pines in the pine forest are around 150 years old, a mature age for a pine. This is where the pine tick thrives. This fungus is abundant and lives on old trees. Wood fungi such as the pine sawfly make the wood soft and attractive to many wood-boring beetles, which are now rare.

Outdoor life

Södra Äspet attracts many visitors through its paths and hiking trails. There is also a bridle path for those who come on horseback. In summer, the beaches offer sun and swimming. Just east of the nature reserve are two municipal bathing areas and a dog bath. Remember to take your rubbish home. There are parking lots in both the northern and southern parts of the reserve. You can also get here by public transport from Kristianstad/Åhus. The eastern parts of the nature reserve border on Skåneleden SL6.
