The Lilla Äskhult cultural reserve with surrounding land is Halland's fourth cultural reserve. Together with the adjacent Äskhult cultural reserve (which for the sake of clarity will be called Stora Äskhult), it is also of national interest for cultural environment protection (KN 11).
Lilla Äskhult is a small agricultural property in the forest area of northern Halland with very old origins. The cultural-historical links between Lilla Äskhult and Stora Äskhult are strong. Both reserves are located on a drumlin. A drumlin is an elongated ridge-shaped moraine hill that was once formed during the ice sheet. Often there is a mountain core at the end from which the ice moved with the moraine slope as a "tail" behind it. The drumlin on which both environments are located has long been an attractive farming environment that was certainly already cultivated in prehistoric times. The links between Lilla and Stora Äskhult are not just geographical. Historically, there are very strong ties here. The names Lilla and Stora Äskhult reflect a close relationship in terms of settlement. Both units are found in the older land registers as independent tax units. Lilla and Stora Äskhult together formally constituted Äskhult village.
The cultural-historical content of the Lilla Äskhult property is different from that of the adjacent Äskhult cultural reserve. Lilla Äskhult's settlement is located on the rocky hillside on the drumlin's "buttress side", while the eastern part is part of the long-used agricultural landscape on the crest of the drumlin ridge. This means that the property partly has a small broken younger character but it is also part of the long-used drumlin environment that characterizes Stora Äskhult. The buildings and the immediate surrounding field have an older, agrarian character and can be said to reflect a fairly typical environment from around the turn of the century 1900. The timbered flax sauna is a very well-preserved example. Lilla Äskhult settlement and cultural landscape tell of the time following the 19th century agrarian revolution, while Stora Äskhult tells of the time before.
The reserve is not yet accessible with paths, but it is still possible to move around the area. The landscape in the wooded pastures is both dramatic and varied. At the lake you will be able to both camp and swim when the path there is in order.
