Laggarfall, Naturreservat

In the Laggarfall nature reserve, a valuable spruce forest is protected for the future. There are plenty of deciduous trees, hollow trees with ticks and decaying tree trunks - just as it should be in a real old-growth forest. The forest is home to a diversity of rare plants and animals.

Unusual spruce forest

The forest grows on fertile and moist soil. Highly productive spruce forests are usually rationally managed, but this forest has escaped large-scale logging. For generations, the area has been continuously forested. A variety of disturbance-sensitive animal and plant species have therefore found a refuge here.

Rich mushroom meadows

A variety of exciting fungi have been found in the reserve. Many of them can only be found in old limestone coniferous forests. Such as the hard and tough thorny mushrooms black thorn and drop thorn. Or the rare comb earthstar and four-lobed earthstar. Earthstars are peculiar smoky fungi that initially lie hidden at the surface of the soil. In the fall, they shoot up from the ground and burst into lobed stars. A small, scaly ball of smoke is exposed, containing millions of spores that spread with the wind.

Dead wood - a source of life

The forest is full of common ticks (wood-boring fungi), which cause rot in old and damaged trees. The ticks create lots of dead, decaying wood that becomes home and food for a range of rare species. Woolly ticks and candelabra fungi are examples of fungi that depend on rotting wood for their survival. The same is true of the small moss wood bumblebee. The wood is full of beetles and other small insects. The insects attract woodpeckers and other insect-eating birds. For example, the less common three-toed woodpecker lives in the reserve.

Accessibility

Laggarfall belongs to level 1 in the county administrative board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities.
