Gysinge, Naturreservat

Gysinge nature reserve on the Nedre Dalälven is an area with typical valley river nature. The banks of the river are lined with deciduous forest and flat river meadows that are regularly flooded. There is also a nature park with an accessible nature trail. Gysinge nature reserve is 463 hectares in size and includes deciduous forests and river meadows that are otherwise unusual in the county. Many people visit the Gysinge area to hike, fish or paddle.

Flooding gives meadow and deciduous forest

The area around the lower Dalälven differs from other river valleys in the country. The landscape here is very flat, which means that the river occasionally floods large areas. The floods are important for river meadows and deciduous forests.

Mattön has a mosaic of river meadows and forests. Aspen and noble deciduous trees such as oak, ash and lime are common. Storön also has one of the country's northernmost oak groves.

Animals in Gysinge

The floods provide species-rich environments that attract birds, mammals and insects. Moose and deer graze on the river meadows. In spring, many woodpeckers drum and owls hoot at dusk. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of sea eagles.

In spring, the lower Dalälven is one of the best resting places in the country for whooper swans. The beautiful rapids are home to both trout and grayling, and the calmer waters are full of pike, zander and perch.

Accessible nature park

Granön is an accessible part of the reserve. A trail and accessible benches are located along half of the area. There is an old English park on the island that was established during the Gysinge mill era.

Many European tree species were previously planted in the park. Along the island's nature trail you can see and read more about the trees. You can also listen to recordings about the trees via a QR code. These recordings can also be found here on the website, see below.

The nature trail, picnic area and parking lot have increased accessibility.
