Beskrivelse
Björkvallsbrännan Nature Reserve is one of the nature reserves established after the extensive fires that raged in Hälsingland in July 2018. The nature reserve provides an opportunity for visitors to experience the effects of the violent forces of the fires, but also how life is returning and how new forest types are developing after the fires. Björkvallsbrännan is part of the so-called Enskog fire, which was ignited by a lightning strike on July 14 and covered more than 4,300 hectares of forest land before the fire was extinguished.
The nature reserve includes the northeastern slopes of Björkvallsberget down to the Vallån valley, as well as a flatter wetland-rich section northwest of Björkvallsberget. The area is dominated by older pine-dominated coniferous forests aged 100-150 years. Natural values in the form of older, partly natural forest-like forest, old pine overhangs and areas with elements of natural forest structures were scattered in the area even before the forest fire.
Be careful in the fire areas
Work on the nature reserves began immediately after the fires were extinguished. The County Administrative Board then surveyed the areas, first by helicopter and later also on site. The creation of the nature reserves is possible thanks to the fact that both private landowners and forestry companies have signed encroachment agreements with Gävleborg County Administrative Board.
In the years following the fires, many fire-damaged trees may fall, which means that it may be risky to visit the areas. Visitors to the areas are advised to exercise great caution.
