Beskrivelse

Stackharen, or “Stackar’n” as it’s pronounced locally, is an island in the Dalälven River that can only be reached by boat. That’s precisely why the island remains largely undisturbed and serves as a sanctuary for birdlife.

A difficult island to navigate—but exciting!

If you do manage to get here, the northern tip of the island is the easiest place to go ashore. There you’ll find slightly drier ground and a grove of spruce trees. The rest of the island is difficult to walk on, as the ground consists of large tussocks.

Many rare birds

Hovran is one of Dalarna’s most species-rich bird lakes and has recurring breeding birds. For example, the yellow wagtail, rosefinch, reed warbler, mockingbird, mallard, shoveler, and teal. The formerly open pastures are becoming overgrown. In the late 1970s, the area was grazed by sheep.

Reorganization of the reserve

Stackharen was initially established as a protected area. The regulations from 1959 are outdated and are currently being reviewed. Since the northern part of Brunnaön, located south of Stackharen, is now being designated as a nature reserve, the Stackharen Nature Reserve will also be reviewed. The boundaries will be adjusted and the regulations amended.

Forskrifter

Conservation Regulations:

It is prohibited to set foot on the island between April 15 and June 30 unless you have a permit from the County Administrative Board. If you are granted a permit, you must use only the path located along the boundary between the land parcels.

Furthermore, only the boat landing at the northern end of that path may be used during the period when the visitor ban is in effect. The ban does not apply to landowners who wish to inspect or cultivate their property.

View the regulations, decisions, and management plan in their entirety via the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s tool “Protected Nature” (Link to another website).
