Beskrivelse

The village of Skattlösberg is situated on a hill that rises above the surrounding forest landscape. It is an old Finnish village in Grangärde Parish, dating back to the 17th century. Remnants of the past are still visible here—in the form of buildings, stone walls, and vegetation.

School, Singing, and Tax Exemption

Take a walk through the village and imagine—what did it look like when the first settlers first arrived here? During the 17th century, settlers were offered land on Crown-owned property and tax exemption for the first few years. It was common for settlers arriving in the area to settle in favorable elevated locations. About ten farms have sprung up over the years. During the 1930s and 1940s, the population was large enough to support a school, a post office, and two stores. The village’s most famous resident was the poet Dan Andersson. He lived in Luossastugan in the early 1900s.

Poor Soil Promotes Greater Biodiversity

When land is used for haymaking or grazing, it gradually becomes nutrient-poor. Small, less competitive plants then have a chance to establish themselves. They come from beaches, marshes, and other naturally open areas. They are light-loving and are usually outcompeted by taller species, but can thrive on minimal nutrients. Over the years, meadows and pastures develop into species-rich communities, bursting with colorful blooms.

Grazing Animals

A large part of the reserve is managed using grazing animals. There are trails through the pastures, and the trail to Luossastugan also passes through them. During the peak season for visits to Luossastugan, the animals graze in other parts of the area rather than right along the trail. Please be considerate of the grazing animals—they are our best landscape stewards!

Keep in mind that cows may become stressed or curious when dogs approach them. When cows are nearby, we advise against entering the pastures with a dog.

Hike the Trail and Wait at Your Mila

There are hiking trails in and around the reserve. Information about the trails is available on signs at the reserve’s entrance. Within the reserve, the trail leads to Luossastugan in the eastern part of the area.

Perhaps it would be fitting to sing a few lines from Dan Andersson’s “Jag väntar vid min mila” or “Omkring tiggarn från Luossa” as you wander through these scenic landscapes?
