Stor-Älgsjön, Naturreservat

Stor-Älgsjön is an easily accessible recreational area. It is set in a beautiful landscape where the old pine trees frame the lake and are reflected in the sparkling water. Here you can travel by boat or canoe in the lake. Or perhaps just enjoy nature and the view from the shore.

Here you can travel on quiet waters and cruise between larger wooded islets and smaller skerries or hike in the adjacent forests. The lake has beaches of great variety, ranging from steeply plunging cliffs and rounded rocks, to cranberry and roselle swings. The beautiful landscape, combined with the silence and very little human activity, gives the area an unusual wilderness character for southern Värmland.

The nature reserve consists of two sub-areas, with Stor-Älgsjön itself forming a large part, and the slightly smaller forested part located south of the lake. The reserve has been established with the aim of preserving the natural values associated with older, untouched forest with conditions for a high level of biodiversity. As the area is also a valuable environment for outdoor recreation, it has been decided that the area should be excluded from forestry and given long-term protection through the establishment of a nature reserve.

Animals and plants

The old pine forest frames the lake in a very appealing way. The forest grows on islands and shores with thin soil and at high altitudes. In the hollows on the heights where the spruce dominates, there are rich occurrences of hanging lichen, which gives a magical atmosphere.

The nutrient-poor lake has a fish fauna that includes the most common species of perch, pike, roach and possibly whitefish. Birds such as the common loon, osprey and tern also forage here, while capercaillie and robin occur in the wooded areas.

Before your visit

Adjacent to the lake there is an accessible amenity area, with 2 bench tables with space for a wheelchair at each end, a signpost with information and a fire pit. The paths and amenity area are paved with stone dust and are wheelchair friendly and have barriers to facilitate the visually impaired. There is a dry toilet at the parking lot and there is a ramp to the dry toilet.
