Lämpenshålan, Naturreservat

Here you can see the county's largest dead ice pit. Lämpenshålan has attracted attention for its unusually large differences in level.

From the bottom of the "hole" to the road, the level difference is about 30 meters. The diameter is about 200 meters. The sinkhole was formed during the melting phase of the last ice sheet about 10,000 years ago. The dead ice pit is a crater-like depression left by icebergs embedded in the sand. On the slopes of the ridge there are traces of former shorelines from the land uplift phase of the Vänerbäcken.

The reserve was established to preserve the river section as a geological formation.

Animals and plants

The bird life is rather poor in species, but the greater crossbill, nightjar, blackbird and tree pipit are birds found in the area.

The vegetation consists of dry pine heath with sparse high-stemmed pine forest, where the ground is covered with mosses and lichens. A lush layer of blueberries, lingonberries, crowberries, heather and melons covers the ground.
